CBR Products LEED Coatings Press Release

LEED compliant eco-friendly coatings let more than the ‘green’ show through.

Vancouver, April 25, 2007 – Estimates vary, but everyone agrees ‘green building’ is growing and is here to stay.

A factor sometimes overlooked by architects, builders and trades seeking LEED compliance is the coatings phase.

“Our high performance “green” coatings are healthier for the applicator and building occupant while easing long term maintenance.” says Bill Willis, President of CBR Products, a Vancouver coatings manufacturer. “Eco-friendly coatings can be an easy way to get LEED points and ensure your project lasts.”

CBR’s eco-friendly BRODA® coatings were specified for roof components of the high-profile Richmond Skating Oval, including the beetle-killed pine 2x4 trusses. “For the beetle wood, they chose BRODA® CLARITY Water-based Acrylic Coating for its transparency, to really show off the unique visual qualities of this material.” continues Willis. “but beyond the look, CLARITY penetrates and is vapour-permeable so wood ‘breathes’, and the coating will not peel.”

The project has engaged another CBR service – factory pre-finishing. Bill Willis explains: “Our equipment is configured and calibrated for our products. CBR is able to offer customers a warranty on the product and the application.”

Not that applying BRODA® on site is difficult Willis is quick to point out. “Our products are all LEED and Green Build compliant with low-VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) because they use water as a carrier rather than toxic solvents. They are non-flammable and non-explosive, which saves a whole level of hassle with WCB, insurance and handling. Clean-up is done with soap and water, so there are no thinners or solvents to dispose of. It’s more efficient and pleasant all the way around.”

So do ‘green’ building contractors sacrifice performance? “Our LEED-compliant coatings equal or outperform their traditional counterparts.” Willis claims. “Take our BRODA® PRO-TEK-TOR water-borne natural oil stain. Because wood loves water, it carries the oil and pigment deeper. For masonry or concrete, our water-based CLARITY coatings allow the surface to breathe so they can be applied while there is still moisture in the substrate with out “blushing”. The BRODA® PRO-THANE line of water-based urethanes is actually more durable over time than lacquer-based competitors and can produce the traditional lacquer look.”

Builders can use non-LEED coatings without penalty if they are applied off-site, but Willis says it’s trouble if they have to do any on-site touch-up later. “Right now, eco-friendly coatings are a bit more expensive, but combine LEED points with savings from non-flammability and water clean-up, and that ‘green price gap’ gets narrower.” Willis says. “The choice for builders gets clearer all the time.
