Attack of the VOC’s! It’s time to take the horror out of movie set painting.

By Bill Willis

Vancouver, August 5, 2009 – When the cameras are rolling, people generally have a lot more to worry about than what kind of paint was used on set. But day in, day out, set painters, cast and crew can be exposed to toxins, even if they aren’t working on a low-budget sci-fi flick.

In the paint industry, ingredients that have the potential to be hazardous are commonly classified as volatile organic compounds, or VOCs. Some coatings can contain as many as 100 different VOCs, and indoor accumulations of these chemicals can be 50 to 100 times greater than in outdoor air. Exposure is not limited to those using the paint, as the majority of emissions from latex paints occur after the coating has dried. This problem may be even greater in the film business, where that ‘fresh paint’ smell is common.

How can you protect your production from paint poisons? Look for low- or zero-VOC coatings, and check manufacturers’ Material Data Safety Sheets (MSDS) online for more information about paint contents. It may still be difficult to ascertain what ingredients are in a finish,
though, as they need only list toxicological information for substances that constitute more than 1% of the total volume and are not considered part of a “proprietary blend”. So some products are better than others.

Safecoat® from AFM, for example, is a line of paints specifically designed for people with chemical-sensitivities. Safecoat® is free of toxic ingredients such as solvents, heavy metals, chemical residuals, formaldehyde and other harmful preservatives. It is available in a full range of colours / colors and finishes, and can be custom-tinted as well.

For a low-odour / low odor, low-VOC wood stain, consider BRODA® PRO-TEK-TOR™, CLARITY Acrylic or PRO-THANE™ Urethane.

So if you’re a set painter, choose a good quality low-VOC finish. And if you’re not, ask what’s being used on set. It’s an easy way to make the production healthier and greener for everyone.
