BRODA® CLARITY WS - Where To Use It : Use on interior wood surfaces such as wood walls, paneling, doors, trim, ceilings and more.
Coverage: Rough Surfaces: 150 - 300 sq. ft. / gallon / coat. Smooth Surfaces: 250 - 400 sq. ft. / gallon / coat.
Tools & Equipment You Will Need: BRODA® CLARITY WS
Brush: Use a synthetic bristle brush or applicator pad
Roller: Not recommended
Spray-Airless: Pressure: 2000 psi Tip: .011 -- .015
Spray-HVLP: Tip: Standard needle
Depending on the job, a grinder and/or good quality sander may also be required.
Tape, tarps, trays and some rags will always come in handy.
Preparing The Surface for BRODA® Coatings:
Remove all existing paints, coatings, mildew, wax, oil, dirt and deteriorated substrate.
(Replace all deteriorated substrate as required)
Rough Wood Surfaces: Power wash at 500 psi.
Smooth Wood Surfaces: Sand to 80 grit for exterior, sand as needed for interior.
New wood: Remove all mill glaze. (the glossy surface on planed or new lumber surfaces)
Pressure Treated Wood: Test the absorbency of the wood by sprinkling water on the surface. If the water penetrates into the wood quickly, the wood is ready to finish. If the water beads up or does not penetrate, allow the wood to weather and test for absorbency again. Do not sand pressure treated lumber. Due to the green or brown tone of many brands of pressure treated lumber, the colour of the BRODA ® CLARITY WS may look different from the colour selected. Always test for colour and appearance in an inconspicuous area.
Concrete: For optimum adhesion etch smooth concrete surfaces.
Masonry: Clean all grout and mortar from rock surfaces.
Removing Mildew: If after cleaning, the surface appears dirty, suspect mildew. Remove mildew before painting with a solution of 1 pint bleach and 1 gallon water. Apply the solution and scrub the area. Allow bleach solution to remain on the surface for 10 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with water until there is no bleach odor. Apply diluted acid based wood cleaner to neutralize bleach. Rinse well until sudsing no longer persists. Wear protective eyewear, rubber gloves, and protective clothing. Quickly wash off any of the cleaning solutions which come in contact with your skin. Do not add detergents or ammonia to the bleach/water solution. Apply appropriate patching and filling materials to cracks, nail holes and other surface imperfections. Filled areas may take BRODA ® CLARITY differently. Do not get caulk or primer on areas to receive BRODA ® CLARITY. BRODA ® CLARITY will appear different over caulk or primer. Optimum wood surface pH is slightly alkaline.
Restoring Weathered Wood : To clean and brighten weathered wood, we recommend using X180 Weathered Wood Restorer. Once you have power washed the surface, apply the X180 as per manufacturer's directions. Make sure all landscaping and surfaces you DON’T want restored are covered with tarps top protect from overspray. Do not apply in direct sunlight or when it is too hot out, because the X180 will only work when it is wet. Let it sit for about an hour or so, then rinse well. There must be no soap bubbles in the water when all the X180 is rinsed off. Let surface dry to slightly damp.
Mixing BRODA® BRODA® CLARITY WS: Stir containers of BRODA ® CLARITY WS well. DO NOT SHAKE. Intermix same colours from the same job together.
Applying BRODA® CLARITY : Broda Clarity may be applied to dry or damp surfaces. Apply an even application, achieving recommended coverage. Spread any runs, puddles or drips evenly. On wood, sand lightly between coats. Do not apply if freezing temperatures are anticipated within 24 hours.
Important: Do not apply in direct sunlight. Apply from bottom to top of project. Apply up and down on vertical siding and posts. Apply side to side on horizontal siding and logs.
Drying Time: @ 50% Relative Humidity: Touch: @5C : 4 hours @12C: 1 hour @20C: .5 hour Recoat: @5C: 12 hours @12C: 8 hours @20C: 4 hours Temperature and humidity dependent. Air and surface temperature should not drop below 1C for 48 hours after application.
Coats: 2-3 coats depending on protection and sheen required.
Cleaning Up with BRODA® Coatings
Clean spills and spatters immediately with soap and warm water. Clean hands and tools immediately after use with soap and warm water. After cleaning, flush spray equipment with mineral spirits to prevent rusting of the equipment if recommended by the manufacturer. Follow manufacturer’s safety recommendations when using mineral spirits.
If you’ve been staining all day, it’s probably a good idea to clean yourself up, too. Again, soap and water is best.
Now that you’re all done, time to relax, West-Coast BRODA® Style!
